Description
The Cylindrum is not a truck. It’s a series of tubes! 1½” PVC and 4” corrugated ABS tubes to be precise. Originally designed and created as an experimental live performance piece, the project quickly shifted to this sample library. After some mathematical investigations, along with plenty of elbow grease and bloody fingers, over 40 feet of tubing had been cut, tuned and sampled using hands, paddles and sticks. The end result was over 3,300 individual hits, spanning more than 4 octaves. The open-end cylindrical air column created by the tubes provides a deep, bouncy, synth-like tone with a strong fundamental note. The closed-end articulation creates a fundamental with odd harmonics and overtones, similar to an array of tuned tom-tom drums. It’s an experimental percussionists dream come true!
The Cylindrum features three main articulation types: Dry Fat (4” ABS tube, open-end), Dry Small (1½” PVC pipe, open-end) and Hall (4” ABS tube, closed end). The Dry articulations were recorded in a booth, very close in wide stereo. The Hall articulation was recorded in a large, bright stone, tile and glass hall. The 4” ABS tubes were recorded with 13 individual root notes, 10 round-robins and up to 7 velocity layers each. 30 individual root notes of the 1½” PVC pipe were recorded with over 25 velocity layers and two round-robins. The Dry Fat also features a “mute” articulation.
As always, we’ve packed our custom user interface with lots of great sound-shaping controls that give you the flexibility to warp the shape in many ways. You have control over Volume Swell, Attack, Release, Transient Offset, Vibrato, Filters, Tuning, articulation switching, cross-fading and layering, and so much more.
You’ll also find an adaptable LFO system, with selectable LFO shape, modulation target parameter, speed, intensity, tempo-syncing and fade-in time. You can also apply your choice of 13 lowpass, high-pass and FX filters, with assignable modulation targets such as velocity, mod-wheel, expression, after-touch, key position and step-sequencer table control.
You can also use our customizable arpeggiator, with a built-in velocity sequencer table and control over arp direction, note timing, swing, randomization and duration. We’ve also included a key and scale lock system that allows you to constrain your notes to a wide variety of common scales and keys for easy melodic composition and live performance.
