Hi!
The Yamaha DX7 was not only the first mainstream digital synth, but also the most famous synthesizer of the 1980s. I’ve been making a video about it, and somewhere along the way I became obsessed. So obsessed, in fact, that I ended up building my own FM synthesis engine for Decent Sampler. The DX7 is famously hard to program, and the factory sounds are pretty cheesy and dated — but the underlying FM synthesis technology is fascinating, and unlike anything that came before it.

There exists a wonderful software emulation of the DX7 called Dexed. It’s free, and anyone curious about this kind of synthesis should definitely download it. That said, I thought it might be interesting to try rolling my own similar engine. I mean–how hard could it be? (Famous last words.)
All of this is to say that there is now a new FM synthesis engine tucked away inside the Decent Sampler plugin.
To show it off, I programmed a cartridge of sounds on the real DX7, converted them into a Decent Sampler script, and present them to you here. They embody a pixelated, 80s digital aesthetic that should be perfect for vaporwave or retro music.
Of course, you will need to download the latest version of Decent Sampler for the sounds to work (v1.22.3 or later).
Hope you enjoy these sounds!
