The Speak & Music is a fully playable virtual instrument built from a rare 1980s educational synthesizer by Texas Instruments.

Originally designed as part of the Speak & Spell series, this small plastic device hides a surprisingly rich and characterful sound engine — unstable oscillators, gritty digital artifacts, and a raw lo-fi texture that feels alive and imperfect in the best way.

I carefully sampled the instrument in detail, capturing its full range of tones, quirks, and unpredictable behaviors — to turn it into a versatile instrument you can use in your own compositions.

The Speak & Music sits somewhere between a toy, a synth, and a broken machine.
Its sound is fragile, nostalgic, and slightly unstable, perfect for creating atmosphere and emotion.

Unlike typical lo-fi plugins, this is not an emulation, it’s a direct capture of a real instrument, with all its limitations and personality intact.
